Imagine anything you've said to your family whilst you're watching our show, in the privacy of your front room, well, these families take it into the studio. There’s none of the usual ‘just come back, we want you in the final chase’ it’s ‘if you go low, you can forget Christmas at my house’. “I loved making The Family Chase, and with this twist on the format you'll love it too!”

21:35-22:35 brand new series.5/12.The Jonathan Ross Show.(Series 12).Show 5
DEMI LOVATO spoke about overcoming tough times, dating British men and singing for the Obamas. She also performs.
JAMES ARTHUR on his successful return to music following his struggles with fame and why his mum made him audition for The X Factor series that he went on to win
HOLLY WILLOUGHBY on her TV husband, starting out in the industry and family life
MARTIN CLUNES spoke about his life on the farm and working with Sigourney Weaver, after meeting her on The Jonathan Ross Show
HENRY FRASER shared his inspirational message following the life changing accident that left him paralysed
On this week’s episode of The Jonathan Ross Show - which airs on Saturday night on TV3 - Jonathan is joined by US singer songwriter, Demi Lovato; British singer and former winner of The X Factor, James Arthur; TV favourite, Holly Willoughby; Actor, Martin Clunes plus author of The Little Big Things, Henry Fraser, shares his inspirational story.
American singer, songwriter and actress, Demi Lovato, joined the sofa and spoke to Jonathan about overcoming tough times, dating British men and singing for the Obamas. She also performed.
Speaking about obstacles she has overcome in her life, Demi opened up about overcoming addictions: “I went through some tough times and went to treatment for some struggles that I had and now I’ve come out the other side, and I use my stories to help others and inspire them to get the help they need… I had family and really close friends and my manager, they all were by my side through everything. I wouldn’t be here without them. My fans too, I feel they gave me a reason to live and I’m forever grateful.”
On the moment she realised she needed help, she said: “There were a few [interventions by family and friends] but the final one, everyone was like, ‘We are no longer going to leave, we are leaving.’ That was the moment when I thought, ‘OK I really need to get help and get sober.’”
She continued: “This time I knew… I had hit rock bottom and I just needed to do this for myself. I knew that I had a lot of life ahead of me but one of the main reasons of getting sober was so that I could be around my little sister because my mum and dad [said I couldn’t be around her] if I was doing stuff. So I got the help I needed and now I co-own a treatment centre.”
On how she continues to stay well, she admitted: “There are days when you fight temptation for sure but those days get further and further apart. I’ve been sober for five and a half years now and it gets a lot easier. It’s so much easier than it was at the beginning and now there are days when I don’t even think about it. I just don’t put myself in certain situations that I know there is going to be a ton of alcohol or possibly drugs there, I just try not to be around them.”
Demi also spoke about being asked to sing for the Barack and Michelle Obama when they were the President and First Lady: “I was going to leave out [my song] ‘Cool for the Summer’ because I thought it wasn’t White House appropriate. It’s a bit saucy. ‘Gotta taste for the cherry, I just need to take a bite’ and ‘Take me down to your paradise’ [are the lyrics]. You know, just stuff you wouldn’t want to say in front of the President. So I left it out of the set list and when they got hold of the set list, I guess Michelle Obama had requested ‘Cool for the Summer’ so I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m going to have to perform this for the President, this is so embarrassing… awkward!’ So they were formal in the audience and there’s a part where I say, ‘Shh don’t tell your mother’ and I actually said, ‘Shh don’t tell the President.’”
Demi - who was in the kids show, Barney & Friends - admitted that she had a crush on the man in the character’s suit when she was younger: “Barney is weird but he was really cute, the guy in the suit was hot and I had a crush on him. The suit is [heavy] so you have to be ripped to carry it around, so he was fit and he had a good face. He was a dream boat.”
On her love life at the moment, she said: “I’m dating. I’m just having fun right now.”
Jonathan asked, “You have dated British men in the past, I believe?”
“I wouldn’t say dated… I’ve hung out with [them]. It’s really funny because when they dirty talk it’s really proper. Grammatically correct and proper. Like ‘Would you like me to do this?’ and you’re like, ‘Yes!’” Demi laughed.
Demi also spoke about Disney Channel’s Camp Rock series, which she was a part of. Teasing about a Camp Rock 3, Demi shared her ideas: “I came up with the idea that we should do an R rated Camp Rock 3. It’s the adults only one. I don’t know if you’ve seen American Pie but, without the pie… I would love to do it. I think it would be hilarious if the camp counsellors were sneaking out and partying. If my character, Mitchie, has a pregnancy scare, make it scandalous.”
She also spoke about a meme of her that has gone viral, nicknamed ‘Poot Lovato’: “My fans created this. It was this altered image of me and at first I was really embarrassed… Poot for the win! It’s time to embrace The Poot!”
Demi also showed off her skills in Ventriloquism with a sock puppet. [Pictures available from REX]
British singing talent - and former winner of The X Factor - James Arthur, joined the sofa and spoke to Jonathan about his struggles with mental health, his successful comeback and why he has huge respect for Simon Cowell.
On how he came to audition for The X Factor, which he went on to win in 2013, James revealed his mum encouraged him to apply, promising that in return she’d give him five pounds for his electricity metre.
“My mum was always my last resort [when I’d run out of electricity] because I was too proud to ask and I called my mum up and she said, ‘The X Factor is in town they are doing these mobile auditions. If you go down and sing them a song, I’ll give you the money and you can get your lights back on.’ At the back of that queue I did just think, maybe I’ll leave and tell her I didn’t get through.”
He continued: “My mum deserves a lot of credit for the success that I have achieved. She instilled a lot of belief in me as a kid. Whenever I used to sing along to Michael Jackson or whatever she was playing in the kitchen, she would say, ‘You’re the best singer in the world’ she really believed in me.”
He later added: “Me and my mum have had our differences over the years but she’s always believed in me and she is probably the reason why I’m sitting here.”
James spoke about the well documented struggles he faced in the years after entering stardom: “Things just happened too quickly for me… I went from living in a little bed sit and not having many expectations to having a lot of judgement overnight.”
“I just totally lost it… I just took myself too seriously I think.”
On his Twitter spats of the past, James explained: “I was never able to send nice messages back. Where I came from if people gave you sh*t, you gave it them back. At the time I was a bit of a d*ck. I know my natural resting face is miserable but now I am super happy. I am very happy as I am fulfilling my purpose. I am passionate about this mental health thing and I like there is a movement now and I want to be another voice.”
He also spoke about the mental health struggles he has faced: “I got really sick of these panic attacks. I was having these really vicious anxiety attacks. I thought my life was terrible, I thought it was the worst thing. I would call ambulances and think I was dying. The fear felt very real. You truly do feel like you’re going to die. I got really sick of that, I wanted to start living again so I just started playing football again, I think you’ve got to really focus on something… However you can achieve living in the now, that certainly helped my mental health issues. I lost everything, I totally pressed the self destruct button and did some stupid things that I’m really ashamed of, really embarrassed about and I had to work my way back up. There’s more of a sense of achievement now. I feel like I’m back where I wanted to be.”
James also revealed he is trying to remove tattoos he got inked on his body when he was in the process of “self medicating” after struggling with fame.
“I’m trying to remove them now. It’s because during that time of self medicating, I don’t remember half of the ones I got.” Of the tattoo on his face, he admitted, “I don’t remember why I did it.”
James spoke about his surprise at the success of his newest album because he felt he’d gone so far off the radar: “It was a massive surprise. I was in all of those ‘Where are they now?’ articles and it felt like I was a bit of a joke.”
James also admitted he didn’t want breakout hit, ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ to feature on his platinum selling album, saying he only wrote it because his team suggested he added some love songs to the album of “redemption songs.” He also joked he was hungover when he wrote it.
James also spoke about his relationship with music mogul, Simon Cowell, and how and why he apologised to him after his troubles: “I did apologise to Simon. I was lucky enough to be given a platform and it’s done amazing things for me and then I went and handled that irresponsibly. I feel I owe a lot to the show and I apologised for being a t*sser. He’s much more down to earth than I imagined he’d be. I was just on the final of America’s Got Talent and it’s the biggest show on America, and to me it was a massive moment, this is one of the highlights of my career. I’m singing on telly in America to [millions] of people, and we were in Simon’s dressing room after the show and he was like, ‘Look at us, we’re just a bunch of British people here in America doing really well.’ I thought that was so gracious and even he, after all his success, still values those moments and that’s why I have a lot of respect for him.”
TV favourite and host of TV3 shows such as This Morning and Celebrity Juice, Holly Willoughby, joined the sofa and spoke to Jonathan about bessie mate, Phillip Schofield, family life and how her childhood dinners did not influence her new book.
Appearing on the show for the first time on her own, Holly spoke about the TV men in her life who usually sit alongside her, Phillip Schofield and Keith Lemon.
“Phil is cool, Keith is really annoying but you could have guessed that right? He’s like my naughty older brother who flirts with me occasionally,” she laughed.
On her friendship with Phillip, she said: “I love that man. We met on Dancing on Ice, rink side would you believe. I’d obviously watched him on the telly lots, he was in the Broom Cupboard, he was my children’s TV presenter that I used to watch. I was a bit scared when I first met him but that changed very quickly when I realised he was basically me in the male form.”
Later in the show, Holly admitted she did face criticisms when she first started out in TV: “I think I have it less now, I think when I started out I did because a lot of people look at the blonde hair and this and that and the other and have a massive judgement on you. When i first started in telly, I had a lot of negative comments about myself but then I suddenly realised I couldn’t be anyone else and actually the bits where I mess up or I’m just me seem to be the things that work. And I think when you do so much of it, you can only be you. And when you accept that then that just makes things easier.”
Earlier this week, Holly interviewed a couple who enjoyed tantric sex for 18 hours a day: “I actually requested the couple who had the 18 hour orgasm, I’ve requested that we fly them over here because I want to meet them. Not because I want to achieve that myself but because I need to meet them. They were living life to the max!” she laughed.
Holly spoke about her children and whether she might add more to her brood: “I love babies. I don’t like the thought of it ever being over. But I don’t think that’s a reason to have another one, if I was lucky enough to have another one. Three is a really good number. I’m a working mum, I’m very busy and my children are the most important thing and I think the balance is really right. We were waiting for Chester to come along. As soon as he came along, everything felt perfect.”
Holly - who admitted she was very passionate about food - said her newest book on food for babies is a surprise considering her own childhood dinners: “It’s bizarre because my history of cooking isn’t great. I didn’t have one of those parents that instilled cooking into me from a really young age. My mum is absolutely the most wonderful mum in the whole world but she could not cook… Put it this way, I didn’t have a roast chicken that came out of the oven until I left home. The microwave was invented when I was a child, so mum would shove the carcass into the microwave and put it on. My dad used to call it ‘Chicken Ding’ because you’d put it in then it would ding… I still hanker after that food because for me it was, it’s so soft an amazing and nice. If you’d grown up on it, you’d still have that [feeling].”
British actor and star of TV3’s Doc Martin, Martin Clunes, joined the sofa and spoke to Jonathan about working with Sigourney Weaver - after originally meeting on The Jonathan Ross Show - and life away from the red carpet.
Speaking about Sigourney Weaver returning to the new series of TV3’s Doc Martin, Martin said: “It was on your show that I first met her and she said she wanted to be in it. My wife was there, who produces the show, and she said ‘Fine you can be in it.’ So we had a little tiny part hardly expecting her to be able to do it. Then she said she wanted to come back so we gave her a much bigger part… She shoehorned it in and I think she loved it because straight from us she went to do about three Avatar films back to back which is quite a heavy schedule… So to come and do a bit of acting with her best friend, old friend, Selina Cadell, they were like two kids. Selina plays the chemist, she is hysterical. And she had loads of stuff with Sigourney, they were fighting.”
Martin also spoke about farming which has become a huge part of his life: “When I first started doing it, I never saw this coming, it wasn’t the plan. It just drifted on to us and I thought, ‘This won’t last.’ 10 years later... You find yourself at two in the morning, pinning a ewe to the wall as you strip milk off her to put down a line to the stomach of a lamb that’s not drinking it and you think, ‘I’m supposed to be a luvvie, what am I doing here?’”
Jonathan joked, “You should be on a red carpet somewhere!”
Martin agreed: “Yes.”
Jonathan asked him: “Could you see the day when you could give up acting just to be there?”
“It’s tempting but at the moment, I earn better as an actor than a farmer,” Martin admitted. “It’s always hard leaving it, it was hard getting on the train this morning, it gets harder. I love every inch of the farm, every tree.”
Martin revealed he even ropes old pal and Men Behaving Badly co-star, Neil Morrissey, into his farming passion: “We have a fayre and he came over to judge the ‘Dog most like Neil Morrissey’ competition for us,” he laughed.
Inspired by his story, Jonathan also invited Henry Fraser onto the show. The young man spoke about the positive message he wants to spread, following a life changing injury that left him paralysed.
Henry had a freak accident in the sea whilst on holiday in Portugal with friends, aged 17. His spinal cord was damaged and he has been left unable to move from the neck down.
The 25 year old spoke to Jonathan about difficulties he has overcome and his positive outlook for the future.
When he first arrived back in the UK a few months after being treated for his accident in Portugal, Henry explained that he found himself unrecognisable in hospital. He couldn’t breathe for himself or speak. He said: “I didn’t recognise myself. I’d lost four stone by that point, I couldn’t breathe for myself, I was just this razor thin young man just there. As soon as I got back to my hospital room [after seeing my reflection for the first time] I just broke down and started to cry and cry. That’s when I started to question, ‘Why me?’ I just wanted to be able to hug my mum and I couldn’t do that. It was a brutal, horrible day… It wasn’t until that night when I tried to get to sleep... It was about three or four in the morning and I was just lying there and everything just seemed to stop and I suddenly thought to myself, ‘There’s no point me being sad or angry that this happened, there is no one to blame, I may as well get on with it.’ From that moment my whole mindset changed. I was able to focus on getting better and focus on things that I could do and just try and push myself as much as I could.”
Sharing his positive outlook, he said: “I wake up every day and I think to myself about the incredible friends and family I have around me. The incredible life my parents have given my brothers and me. I get to wake up and do a job I love every day, art and public speaking. I get to challenge myself every day and push myself and move forward. When I look at my life in that way, I consider myself very lucky.”
He also spoke about how art has become a huge part of his life since his accident: “When I was young I used to love art. As I got older, I fell out of love with the subject. When I finished school, I would have dropped the subject. At the start of January 2016, I had a sore on my back as a consequence of my injury and I was getting bored in bed, so I started drawing on my iPad. First of all I’d touch it by holding a mouth stick with a stylus to touch the screen and started really basic then when I got well enough to get out of bed, I started with pencils, mostly focussing on portraits of people. Then a few months after that I started with painting and it’s been a whirlwind two and a half years… It’s been an interesting time, it’s given me a lot and without the accident I wouldn’t have rediscovered my love for art again… I always say with these things that ‘adversity has given me a gift’ in terms of I’ve been given opportunities I could only have dreamed of. Things like coming on this show, holding an exhibition and having my love of art back again.”
World renowned author, JK Rowling, wrote the foreword for Henry’s book, The Little Big Things. JK Rowling came to his defence after he received a horrible email from a member of the public which he shared online.
“[JK Rowling] has been on board since the start. Her support has been incredible… She has been great... I got an email from someone a couple of years ago now. This random woman emailed me to say I should have died that day in the water when the accident happened, she said I was stupid for what I did, this, that and the other… Of course I read it and at first I was a bit shocked then I sent her a very lovely reply back, very calm.”
He put the exchange on Twitter, which came to JK’s attention: “JK saw it and said something and then it just went viral. That email gave me more publicity than I could ever dream of. I should send her another email back and thank her really,” he joked.
The incredible artist says he is not quite ready to give himself that title yet: “I always say ‘Mouth Artist’ I’m not ready to drop the ‘Mouth’ bit yet… In my head I’m going to be doing [another exhibition] again next year.”
Inspired by Henry’s story, Jonathan thanked him for appearing on the show: “It’s been lovely to meet you… Everyone goes through stuff but man, you really have been through stuff and to see you dealing it with such positivity and such generosity of spirit is really just wonderful. Thank you for coming on the show.”.*The Jonathan Ross Show Series 12 Episode 6 of 12 is on next Saturday (6th,October,2018) at 9:45pm-10:45pm

The four contestants will each answer a series of general knowledge questions as they attempt to get their tactics right and make it into the final chase, where they will then face the chaser once again for the chance to walk away with the prize.
Chasers Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty, Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace, Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha and Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan will be doing their best to ensure they leave with nothing.
Host Bradley said: “Let four members of a family loose on The Chase and you get The Family Chase. Imagine anything you've said to your family whilst you're watching our show, in the privacy of your front room, well, these families take it into the studio. There’s none of the usual ‘just come back, we want you in the final chase’ it’s ‘if you go low, you can forget Christmas at my house’.
