But in that time he has recognised that for many people, a stand-alone garden is not enough. They dream of a stunning outdoor space, that works hand in hand with their home.
For the first time, Alan and his expert team create brand new indoor spaces to compliment the amazing outdoor spaces they have always designed for truly inspirational people. Top architects, builders and gardeners give run-of-the-mill homes a jaw-dropping transformation, for people who truly deserve them.
Episode 2
In episode two, Alan travels to Eltham, South London to meet Manisha and Rajeev Seesurrun.Their son Aryan was born in 2008 and almost immediately, his health became a huge concern. Aryan was starved of oxygen at birth and has been left with severe cerebral palsy as a result. He requires 24 hour care, so Manisha has given up her job and her dreams of becoming a designer to care for him full time, while Rajeev works long hours to support the family.
As Alan explores their semi detached home he is struck by the warren of small rooms and lack of space for Aryan’s medical equipment. Manoeuvring Aryan’s wheelchair through the house is extremely difficult and effectively renders mother and son prisoners in their front room. Manisha explains how Aryan loves nature and often feels frustrated that he is unable to go outside into the garden. It’s a project unlike any other that Alan has tackled. A total redesign of the house and garden will be like breaking the family out of prison.
Alan enlists architects George Bradley and Ewald Van Der Straeten to open up the ground floor of the house and help connect it to the outside space. Builder Kunle Barker realises their vision as his team set to work taking down the old conservatory, building a new side extension and removing many of the obstructive, internal walls and doors.
A bespoke shelving and storage area provides a place to store Aryan’s equipment. New furniture to fit the space allows Aryan’s wheelchair to move easily throughout the house. And a giant roof lantern allows light to flood into the new open plan kitchen diner.
Huge, sliding glass doors lead out on to a brand new, full width terraced deck with steps down to the garden and a lift for Aryan. Katie Rushworth creates staggered beds to manage the dramatic level change of the sloping garden and the colour of the new blush pink kitchen is echoed in the flowers, foliage and leaves of the plants used to fill the beds closest to the deck. Finally, a beautiful summerhouse is built as a studio for Manisha to indulge her love of design work.*Love Your Home and Garden Series 1 episode 3 of 3 last in series and series finale airs on next Wednesday (19th,September,2018) at 8:00pm-9:00pm.
